Two Exhibits Sponsored by Spirit in the Arts at California Institute of Integral Studies Open August 19
PR Newswire SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Spirit in the Arts at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) presents two art exhibits beginning this August: collage works by David King at the Main Building Gallery and abstract oil painting and monotypes by Marc Ellen Hamel at the Minna Street Center Gallery. Both shows run August 20 through October 19, 2007. In Benevolent Beings, artist David King creates pieces that reflect the peacefulness and benevolent energy that are part of his personal experience, despite the troubles inherent in the world today. King was born and raised in the Boston area and came to California in 1991. His work has been shown in Europe and across the United States, including venues such as Artists Space in New York, The Soap Factory in Minneapolis, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and The Lab in San Francisco. King's collages are constructed in the traditional cut-and-paste method and explore his response to sexuality, spirituality, and HIV (he has been HIV-positive for more than 22 years). Marc Ellen Hamel is an abstract painter for whom color is the primary catalyst, but the "story behind the eyes" is crucial to her final image. In Recollections in Color, Hamel considered herself an explorer, reflecting on her experiences and sharing her story as she applied layers of color, made marks, and created forms within color fields. She has been represented by a number of galleries, most recently Steel Gallery in San Francisco, and her work is in numerous private collections in San Francisco, Seattle, and Europe.
